New York during the festive season is like nothing you have ever experienced before. There are decorations on every building, Christmas trees in every lobby and above all a feeling of happiness and high spirits in the city that never sleeps. Having now experienced every season and time of year in New York City I can safely and confidently say that December is the best. If you are planning to visit the Big Apple I suggest coming for Christmas without a doubt. Make sure and pack plenty of warm clothes though because I am writing this it is currently 1 degree outside! New York City has festivities happening throughout all the burrows from December onwards. I have taken a few photographs of the little joys I have experienced this Christmas in New York City and shared them below.
Christmas Markets are a highlight of the festive season for tourists and New Yorkers alike. In Manhattan you will find markets in Bryant Park and Union Square through December and on the Upper West Side for one night marking the beginning of Winter. The markets are filled with Christmas decorations and plenty of inspiration for gifts and souvenirs. Union Square even had a stall where they make a personalised wreath for your home right in front of your eyes! Make sure to attend the markets hungry, as there is so an abundance of food on offer from every cuisine imaginable.
The Rockefeller Tree is the obvious choice when visiting New York at Christmas time. But let me tell you, it does not disappoint! You can go to the lighting of the tree late November or simply visit it anytime during the holiday season when it is quieter. Make your way from the tree to Saks on Fifth Ave to take in their Christmas Lights display (night time only).
New York department stores are like no other all year round but at Christmas time they really step it up a level! You will find Christmas decorations in every store you enter in Manhattan so make sure to look around and take it all in. The store windows are amazing at this time of year and my personal favourites of 2016 were Saks, Macy’s and Lord & Taylor.
Every hotel lobby and entrance is decorated beautifully during the festive season. Make sure to check out the Plaza hotel for some serious inspo and the tree in the Palace Hotel’s courtyard for a photo op.
I think my favourite part about being in New York for the holiday season is the effort people go to in their homes to spread the Christmas cheer. It truly brightens my day when I’m walking down the street and see wreaths on every door, foliage on the railings of townhouse stoops and sparkling lights around every corner.
