The humble bedroom; we spend so much time in this room of the house so it is important that it is as functional as it is beautiful. The bedroom holds plenty of opportunity for storage in your home given the large-scale furniture that is often used. We need our bedrooms to feel organised and tranquil to ensure a good night sleep. Style + Space have a few tips on bedroom storage and how to make this room feel a little less cluttered.
The bed is (obviously) the most important piece of furniture in the bedroom and when utilised to its fully potential is a great storage solution. It has been debated for years whether it is a good idea to use the underneath of your bed as storage but I say go for it! Make sure you have a bed that is high enough to allow storage boxes underneath or there are some great beds on the market with inbuilt storage solutions. Use long, shallow storage boxes that have wheels on the bottom so you can easily pull them in and out. You can also store your suitcases under the bed with clothes or shoes you aren’t wearing inside. My biggest tip is to make sure you go through the items under your bed regularly to make sure you aren’t taking up valuable storage space on items you no longer need.
Our wardrobes are usually where the chaos happens in the bedroom, as you can easily close the door on the madness that lurks beyond. There are a few little tricks that Style + Space would like to share with you to maximize the storage space in your wardrobe. Firstly, we will assume that you have sorted through all your clothes and shoes and are only keeping the essentials. Your next step is to make sure that all your coat hangers match and are thin and minimal in style. This allows more clothes to fit as the dead space between different coat hangers disappears and you are left with a neat and structured hanging system. If you don’t want to invest in changing all your coat hangers straight away, simply buy a few each week and toss out the old ones as you go. This may be an obvious one, but make sure all your clothes are folded. When clothes are neatly stacked on top of each other you can fit so much more in, not to mention it looks much better to the eye! Lastly make sure to utilise the vertical space on the top shelf of your wardrobe as this is often wasted.
Furniture may be the most obvious item we think of when we think storage, but often we choose form over function. Every piece of furniture in the bedroom should work as a storage solution as well. Take bedside tables for instance, a lot of people assume these should just be small tables where we can sit our lamp, book and glasses and call it a day. Wrong! (Sorry to be so abrupt) Bedside tables are an amazing place to store your personal items, so opt for a style that has a drawer and a cupboard. There are some gorgeous ones on the market! So shop around and make sure to keep function in mind when looking for the next piece of furniture for your bedroom.
