We introduce to you today, the lovely Dana Borthistle. A recent graduate of graphic design, creating beautiful things. I love the clean simplicity of her work, and the fun and authenticity that shines through. Brisbane Design Catalogue is excited to see where this young talent goes!
What has been your journey to become a graphic designer and illustrator? I have always wanted to be a graphic designer ever since I learned Photoshop in year 7. After leaving school I studied a Bachelor of Multimedia for a year, before changing into a Bachelor of Design which I completed July this year.
Do you love what you're doing? Absolutely, I love having the freedom to create what I love and what makes me the most happy! I honestly don't see myself doing anything else.
What is it about graphic design particularly that you love? I love that graphic design has the power to influence everyone’s outlook, mood and perception of the world, whether or not they recognise it. I believe this influence can and should be used for positive change, such as reducing stigmatisation, changing people’s habits and attitudes in a positive direction and making people feel confident and happy about themselves. I love that graphic design extends beyond a logo and website design. Graphic design can produce visual aids that will help communicate ones ideas. An instructive image can convey ideas that cannot be expressed with only using words.
Are there any stand out moments of inspiration in your journey of design and creativity? Towards the end of my degree, I realised that my most successful designs were ones that I personally enjoyed creating. I decided to stop trying to fit a specific genre and just design things that I love. Who/what are you inspired by? I love organic and geometric forms; as they heavily influence my overall aesthetic. I find great satisfaction in bringing a sort of ordered simplicity to such complex and unique forms. My graphic design influence is Stefan Sagmeister – I love how he challenges the means of graphic design and pushes the limits to create beautiful and unique outcomes.
What are your plans for the business and future? To finally get my online store up and running! I'm so excited to share it!
What do you love about Brisbane? I love that Brisbane is large enough to house a diverse variety of talented creatives but also small enough to maintain a friendly, personable vibe. Brisbane also holds some of the most influential events (Semi-Permanent and Analogue Digital, just to name a few) and local workshops. This gives designers and creatives an opportunity to showcase their talents and share their journey to inspire aspiring designers. Lastly, besides the incredible and ever evolving creative scene, Brisbane has some of the most amazing coffee and cafes, in my opinion!
Do you have some favourite local designers or creatives at the moment? Oh I am inspired by so many right now! But my current favourite Brisbane illustrators are the fabulous Kerrie Hess, Mel Stringer and Tiffany Atkin.
