As many designers are, Alanah Greentree is truly inspired by the detail and design that is found in the natural environment. This might be a well told story, but what came out of this process is unique, beautiful and totally original. Out of school, qualifying in Product Design, Alanah landed a dream job at Urban Art Projects designing public art. Eventually working as Lead Designer for many years, she has run major design projects from concept through to delivery. With an unwavering love for the design industry, she felt the desire to explore something different. In contrast to the often 'hard, permanent' nature of public art, textiles to her seem more transient, tactile and personal. The change she needed was to spend some time working on designs for a smaller, more intimate scale in softer mediums.
So after acceptance into the Master of Design in Fashion and Textiles at the Glasgow School of Art, she packed up her life in Brisbane to complete it. This gorgeous Graduate Collection is the culmination of extraordinary talent and design ability, a year of hard work, and some adventures with her new husband, who lovingly tagged along for the journey.
A simple sentence scrawled in her journal "I want to create the beautiful things" became the cornerstone of this 50s inspired resort ware, which leans strongly on the colours and shapes found in the rugged beauty of Australian flora.
Designed and created from scratch, these fabrics have been meticulously considered in their make. After trial and error on a range of natural fibres, Alanah ended up using all linen, with the exception of one silk shirt. She painstakingly created prints that would fall very deliberately with the pattern of the clothing, and had them digitally applied to the fabrics. A very mathematical process, which has resulted in an immaculate finish.
With a phenomenal eye for detail, excellent sense of taste, and strong creative work ethic, there is no limit to Alanah's potential influence in the future of Australian, and international fashion. She's definitely one to watch.
